TEETH WHITENING

Teeth whitening is a popular treatment that aims to remove discolouration and stains on the teeth and restore the shine of the enamel. However, it should be noted that this method is not a definitive solution and must be repeated periodically for the result to be permanent.

It is also important to distinguish between tooth whitening and tooth cleaning, as they are separate dental treatments. While teeth whitening is designed to enhance the brightness of the teeth, dental cleaning is intended to remove bacterial plaque and tartar that have accumulated on the teeth.

Why Are Teeth Stained ?

The discolouration of teeth is primarily attributable to individual habits and lifestyles. Over time, teeth absorb colour pigments from a multitude of sources, including :

  • Nutrients
  • Certain Beverages, such as coffee
  • Teeth-colouring mouthwashes
  • Medications
  • Tobacco

The deposition of colour pigments in hard tooth tissues (enamel and dentin) results in a change in the natural colour of the teeth, which manifests as a gradual yellowing or darkening.

Is There Any Harm or Any Side Effects From Dental Bleaching?

It is possible that bleaching may cause a transient increase in tooth sensitivity. This may be due to the application of the bleaching agent or to the subsequent exposure to air, as well as to the ingestion of hot or cold food and drinks. This is a normal and expected side effect. The tooth sensitivity is expected to disappear within 24 to 48 hours. In the event of an unexpected situation, it is advisable to consult a physician.

Is Teeth Bleaching Permanent?

Following bleaching, teeth gradually become discoloured over time. The frequency of discolouration varies depending on the patient's consumption of coloured drinks (tea, coffee, wine, coke, etc.) and smoking habits. Permanent bleaching can be achieved by repeating the process every 4 to 6 months for 1 or 2 sessions.

Does Bleaching Damage the Teeth?

Teeth bleaching is a completely harmless procedure for the teeth, provided that it is performed by a dentist.

Is Teeth Whitening Treatment Painful?

Professional teeth whitening is a non-invasive dental procedure that does not compromise the integrity of tooth enamel. The application of the teeth whitening process by a qualified dentist does not result in any long-term damage to the teeth or oral cavity, nor does it lead to a loss of tooth substance. In some cases, patients may experience tooth sensitivity immediately following the teeth whitening treatment. This is a transient phenomenon that typically resolves within 72 hours of the procedure.
